War in the Neighborhood by Seth Tobocman
War in the Neighborhood by Seth Tobocman
Published by Autonomedia in 1999
This is the 1st edition/1st printing, published in 1999 by Autonomedia. Detailing the struggles in Manhattan’s Lower East Side during the 80s and early 90s, between squatters of the dilapidated buildings and the developers, with the city and police force behind. Tobocman paints a grim portrait of NYC in an era rife with racism, sexism, classism and police brutality. While often heavy handed, Tobocman knows of what he speaks, having lived as a squatter and experienced the struggle first hand. Tobocman is one of the founders of World War 3 magazine, and has been a social activist for most of his life. Because the story is so heavy, informational and political, it’s easy to lose sight great an artist Tobocman is. It’s almost secondary to the subject at hand. But it shouldn’t be. His mastery of visual storytelling is unquestionable. The heavy inky panels, the expressionistic, almost wood cut drawings, the spectacular typography, which would give Will Eisner a run for his money, all employed to powerful affect.
